Finally, the third Blu-ray contains the much-fabled "Workprint Version." Although still presented in 1080p/VC-1 video (again identical on both the Blu-ray and HD DVD), the quality here is noticeably inferior. Of course, this version of the film was taken from weak elements, so the often fuzzy picture, weak blacks and pale colors are to be expected. The aspect ratio is also 2.20:1, versus 2.40:1 for the other four cuts of the film, and grain is much more apparent. In any case, since the workprint is labeled as just that -- a workprint -- and is included here for its historical value, its poor quality doesn't detract at all from the set.
Ex-policeman Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is coerced back to work by his supervisor Bryant (M. Emmet Walsh). The exploitation of alien worlds has been made possible by the production of 'replicants', genetic-synthetic creatures difficult to distinguish from humans. They're used as slave workers and soldiers and are forbidden to come to Earth; when they do, 'blade runners' like Deckard are dispatched to kill them. Bryant has determined that four murderous replicants have rebelled and are in Los Angeles. One (Brion James) has already killed a man during a test with a replicant-detecting device called a Voight-Kampf machine. Deckard interviews replicant manufacturer Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel) and discovers a good reason for the replicant revolt: they have a built-in life span of only four years. The fugitive leader Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) leaves a trail of corpses in his search for a genetic technician who can 'give him more life.' Meanwhile, Deckard falls in love with Tyrell's beautiful secretary Rachael (Sean Young), who sympathizes with the doomed replicants.
